Objective
This fellowship offers the Fellows the unique chance to work in the only industry-university collaborative research centre to focus on ionic liquids in the world. The QUILL Centre is based at Queen's University Belfast and has sixteen industrial members (spread across four continents). Training, therefore, will be carried out under the guidance of academics and industrialists and the expertise of chemical engineers, physical, inorganic, organic, pharmaceutical and computational chemists will be readily available. The research training will include the preparation and analysis of ionic liquids and their use as potential solvents and/or catalysts in industrial reactions. As the introduction of clean technologies has become a major concern throughout both industry and academia, ionic liquids are presently undergoing an upsurge of interest as clean solvents. The conventional media used in industry at present are organic solvents, which are high on the list of damaging chemicals not only because they are used in huge quantities but also because they are difficult to contain (due to their volatility). Ionic liquids have several physical properties that make them interesting as potential clean systems the most important being that they are non-volatile. Hence, they may be used in high vacuum systems and many containment problems can be eliminated. As the QUILL Centre is the stepping-stone from bench to pilot plant, training will also include many engineering techniques (both mechanical and chemical), the operation of a high-pressure autoclave and the use of reaction optimisation software. This training site is ideal for a Fellow looking for expert training in several fields and who wishes to be part of a close knit team of researchers working in a very exciting and innovative area of sustainable chemistry.
