Objectif
The technological objectives of our work is to produce a compression bandage capable of exerting the correct treatment pressure over a wide extension range, combined with a EMS system that has the ability to: Deliver 340 volts at a current of 1.8 milliamps to the wound area to stimulate the calf muscle and promote blood flow for the duration of the treatment. Exert a treatment pressure of 40 mmHg +/- 5mmHg regardless of the skill of the person applying the bandage and the dimensions of the patient's leg. The economic objective of our work is to enable the partners and the estimated 10 licences to: Substitute into at least 5% of the current European market of + 2 Bn p.8. for traditional treatment of chronic ulcers and 1 % of the remaining global market of + 4 Bn p.8. by 2010. Generate + 2 Bn p.8. of healthcare savings in Europe (Chronic ulcers cost the EU health authorities over +8 bn pa in patient care, therefore a 30% reduction in healing time (time being the most costly element of treatment) would generate healthcare savings in the EU of over +2 bn pa.) The work programme to deliver the technological objectives consist of work packages to enhance scientific understanding of electrical muscle stimulation and modification of SEBS polymer chemistry to enable the extrusion of fibres with a plateau on the stress strain curve. Flexible electrodes will be created that can be woven into a compression bandage and in conjunction with a saline based hydrogel formulation can deliver EMS to the wound area. The proposed solution will stimulate the calf muscle pump to promote blood flow. A compact lithium ion battery pack and control unit will be created to deliver EMS in a controlled manner to the patient for a duration of 7 days. The project results will be formulated into a protectable form and patent protection will be applied for on the formulation of the water soluble polymer and the chip over moulding aspects of the process.
