EUROpean research program for the PARTitioning of minor actinides and some long-lived fission products from high active wastes issuing the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels (EUROPART).

Objective

The research to be done within EUROPART concerns the Partitioning of long-lived radio nuclides (Lars) contained in the nuclear wastes issuing the reprocessing of nuclear spent fuels. After separation, the Lars will be destroyed in short-lived or stable nuclides by nuclear means (P&T strategy) or conditioned into stable dedicated solid matrices (P&C strategy) The target elements will be the actinides (Ands): Am to CIF for the wastes issuing the reprocessing of UOX or MOX fuels, and U to CIF for the reprocessing of spent fuels and targets (ex: the nuclear double strata concept). The separation techniques to be studied will belong to 2 domains: hydrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy (cf. the previous FP5 programs). The main research axes for both domains will be: 1/ Partitioning of Am-CIF from the high level wastes issuing there processing of high burn-up MOX and multi-recycled MOX fuels, 2/ Partitioning of all actinides together for recycling, for advanced dedicated fuel cycles, i.e. double strata concept, Assign hydrometallurgy, the research is organized in 5 Work Packages (WP). 4 Was are dedicated to the study of Partitioning methods and 1 WP concerns the development of Ands co-conversion methods for fuel preparation. In hydrometallurgy, the research is organized in 4 Was.
(i) 2 Was concern the development of An partitioning methods, and one of them (WP7) also includes basic study of the chemistry of the trans-Cm elements in molten halides,
(ii) 1 WPconcerns the study of the conditioning of the wastes issued from petrochemical processes,
iii) the last WP is dedicated to system studies. There will be a strong management team that will be concerned not only with the scientific, technical and financial issues of EUROPART, but also with other issues such as ethical matters, Science and Society, gender issues, and benefits for Europe. Training and education of the young researchers participating to EUROPART will be also an important part of the project.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
