Theory and computer simulations of interfacial phenomena

Objective

The objective of the project is to carry out studies of non-uniform fluids and interfacial phenomena. In particular it will be investigated how the behaviour and properties of fluids are affected by geometrical constrains, resulting from the presence of a dsorbing surfaces of different shape and properties. The following systems will be studied: colloids in contact with geometrically structured substrates, confined single fluids and their mixtures, structure of fluids in contact with crystalline surfaces an d in the so-called random porous networks, the behaviour of non-uniform molecular fluids molecules, including solutions of large molecules. The investigations will be carried out employing density functional and integral equation approaches, as well as com puter simulation (Molecular Dynamics and Monte Carlo) methods. The project aims to contribute to a better understanding of phase transitions in fluids at solid surfaces, wetting phenomena, adsorption in porous materials, depletion forces in colloidal suspe nsions and the formation of different ordered phases in adsorbed layers. All those problems are nowadays a field of a vivid theoretical and experimental research and are also of a great practical importance. In the framework of this research project the ho st organisation, established in Poland, undertakes partnership with other five groups located in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom. All groups are well recognized in the scientific community and have experience in the fields of sta tistical mechanics, surface science and computer simulations. One of the important goals of the project is to enhance scientific interaction between them. It can be anticipated that cooperation of all groups will result in a further development of theoreti cal methods and will considerably widen the knowledge concerning the structure and thermodynamic properties of non-uniform systems.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
