Genomic approaches for crop improvement

Objective

GENOMICS is the discovery and study of many genes simultaneously and it covers the determination of genome structure, analysis of molecular bases of differences between organisms and analysis of gene function. The genomic technologies are improving our und erstanding of complex characters as well as provide the basis of effective breeding strategies. In Poland this approach is in infancy although it has ability to make important contribution to solving the burning problems of agriculture in front of accessio n to EU. By increasing the productivity and quality of crops this technology will enhance food security, quality of life, and adds much to the value of seeds. The successful implementation of genomics to crop production in Poland will have also impact on d eveloping the genetic supply industry. Therefore the programme is focused on selected topics which are of great importance in plant breeding, including molecular basis of quantitative inheritance, genetic improvement of alternative crops, exploitation of g enetic diversity and molecular evolution of plants. THE OVERALL AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGICAL BASE TO BECOME COMPETENT AND UNDERTAKE MOLECULAR RESEARCH IN PLANTS IN POLISH CENTRE. The objectives of the project are: -To advance interdisciplinary research and apply the modern genomics technologies to fundamental knowledge and sustainable crop improvement. -To improve the participation in international research programmes and integrate with European Research Area. -To promote the plant genomics as a mean for solving socio-economic problems of Newly Associated States. The objectives of the project will be reached through transfer of technologies and knowledge from the specific research areas (positional cloning, high-thr oughput markers, functional genomics, microarrays) as well as through development of complementary skills including project writing, management, networking activities, marketing and communication strategies

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
