Objectif The protection of the environment is one of the key challenges facing the international community in the 21s apos; century. The US and EU, two of the major international actors, have successfully worked together to deal with major environmental problems. H owever, in the past few years, there seems to be an increasing lack of dialogue and understanding on environmental issues between the two sides of the Atlantic. Different views and approaches on, inter alia, climate change and biotechnology have contribute d to the creation of an atmosphere of confrontation between the US and the EU. Such divisions on environmental problems may lead to conflicts in other areas, for example trade, and consequently to the further deterioration o f a fundamental alliance and pa rtnership. Moreover, this is a Iready 1 eading toa failure to properly tackle global environmental problems. The research will analyse the policies and legal instruments adopted at the international level, in the US and in the EU to deal with global enviro nmental problems, in particular climate change and biodiversity (focusing on the issue of genetically modified organisms and biotechnology). The research will concentrate on the approaches and differences between the US and the EU on such issues. It will b e conducted by an initial review and analysis of existing literature, followed by in depth interviews with policy-makers, legislators and stakeholders on both sides of the Atlantic. The research apos;s output will consist of several publications in leading refereed journals, the publication of a monograph, the participation in international conferences and presentations to government officials and civil servants in the US and in EU. Better knowledge of the US position should hopefully lead to a better infor med view in the EU and to closer cooperation between these two crucial actors in the international arena, cooperation which is essential if global environmental problems are to be tackled effectively.apos; Champ scientifique social sciencespolitical sciencespolitical transitionselectionsnatural sciencesphysical sciencesastronomyplanetary sciencesplanetssocial sciencespolitical sciencespolitical policiescivil societynatural sciencesearth and related environmental sciencesatmospheric sciencesclimatologyclimatic changessocial scienceslaw Programme(s) FP6-MOBILITY - Human resources and Mobility in the specific programme for research, technological development and demonstration "Structuring the European Research Area" under the Sixth Framework Programme 2002-2006 Thème(s) MOBILITY-2.2 - Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowships (OIF) Appel à propositions FP6-2002-MOBILITY-6 Voir d’autres projets de cet appel Régime de financement OIF - Marie Curie actions-Outgoing International Fellowships Coordinateur IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND MEDICINE Contribution de l’UE Aucune donnée Adresse South Kensington Campus LONDON Royaume-Uni Voir sur la carte Coût total Aucune donnée
