Objective
The transfer of knowledge due to take place within four years by recruiting three experienced researchers will qualify the Hannah Arendt Institute, that hitherto has been dealing mainly with the historiographical engagement with the German dictatorships, t o extend its historical competence for an analysis of current developments, and to use it for the benefit of comparative research of transition/consolidation. The research project helping to reach this aim will allow the analysis of the political condition s of consolidation and deconsolidation of democracy in the "new" German laender and in the central/east European states of Poland, Czech Republic and Russia, and their interaction with social, economic and cultural factors by using criteria fit for operati onalisation. The Institute, which is situated in a "less favoured region" and in the "triangle" between Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, can develop to a research and policy advice centre working in the area of comparative research of transition/con solidation, networking with the whole of Europe and able to compete with the best US-American institutions. It can also contribute to structuring the east European research area - and indirectly the west European research area too.
