Developing ubiquitous restoration practices for Indo-Pacific reefs

Objective

Coral reefs are coastal ecosystem that provides the largest source of subsistence to people in the Indo-Pacific region. But most reefs are declining. This creates ecological and socio-economic requirements for urgent restoration, whereas, efficient restoration techniques are not available. Here, a consortium of 7 groups (4 Europeans including research institutions and a SME entity) plus 3 Asian partners, are teamed up to restore Indo-Pacific coral reefs under the central strategy concept of "gardening of denuded reef areas". In this two-step restoration measure, a large pool of farmed corals and spats is established and cultured for several years on low-profile nurseries, then, nursery-grown colonies are transplanted to degraded reefs. This will be studied simultaneously in 4 Asian reef areas and by the SME under ex-situ conditions. In order to enhance project resources efficiency, the partners teamed as pairs (Asian-EC), each working in a specific site. We will test the use of branches, coral nubbins and planula larvae and will study the importance of coral branch sizes for 3-D structures of developing colonies. The study is planned for 4 years stemming from the nature of fieldwork and the need to evaluate complex biological topics. Management's knowledge will be based on tight integration of participating research teams, on joint program activities and annual meetings, each at a different reef site where theoretical and applied aspects of the work will be discussed. In a start-up workshop, the entire knowledge that exists will be transferred to the Asian partners. An end project workshop will summarize the outcomes for the partners and for 5 additional invited Asian partners from other countries. This INCO-DEV proposal is relevant to thematic A.2 (sub-priority A.2.3) dealing with the priority of restoring aquatic ecosystems. Outcomes will help in solving Asian's socio-economic requirements spurred by coral reef decline.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
