Objectif
The project will contribute to the key area A2.2 Reconciling multiple demands on coastal zones, Policy analysis and development to create enabling environment to operationalize (implement) the WSSD decision on aquatic ecosystem restoration. It will focus on the issue of adoption of globally binding instrument against the use of organotin compounds in antifouling measures by IMO and its implications to various other coastal uses. It will target shipping (port activity), cruise tourism, fishing, and aquacult ure. It will place before the international community the issues of concern from the context and perspective of a developing country. It will contribute to strengthen institutional capacity building by helping national governments with policy recommendatio ns and also help build capacity in marine science by appropriate knowledge transfer between European and Asian research personnel. It will sddress the implications of ban to shipping and cruise tourism industry and other coastal uses such as fishing and aq uaculture through scenario building and a cost -benefit analysis of using organotin compounds and alternatives. It will provide information on environmental distribution of TBT in European and Asian coastal environments (including fish and other biota). It will try to formulate safer antifouling measures. It will identify suitable indicators, such as fatty acid biomarkers, of the health of coastal resources and develop quality control tools. It will identify microorganisms for detoxification of TBT. It will develop a biomonitoring system to regulate TBT impacts that exist in coastal environments, and individuate safe fishing areas. Dissemination of the project outputs will be achieved through workshops, newsletters and web-site. In sum, the project will coll ect good scientific data and process it, generate knowledge base for dissemination to various stakeholders, develop decision tools for policymaking, and build capacity for better management of coastal health.
