Objective
In view of developing an innovative non-animal test method for chemicals, medicines, biological and bio-materials, the proposed project has the final goal of producing a prospective analysis of the mechanisms of nuclear hormone receptors and their potential as tools for the assessment of developmental toxicity. The prospective analysis will either define a practical research programme for future RDT activities in this field, or conclude that the area is not sufficiently mature at present time. The specific objectives of the project are the following: - To investigate the role of nuclear hormone receptors in developmental and reproductive biology and to review the state of the science in this field; - To define a practical research programme with the aim of enhancing knowledge on the mechanisms of developmental toxicity and the role of nuclear receptors in the process; - To develop a plan aimed at applying such understanding to the future assessment of the relevance of in vitro systems as predictive models for developmental toxicity. The project, proposed as an SSA, consists of two workshops where the best European research resources in the area of molecular biology, genomics and developmental toxicology will be pooled together with the aim of investigating the role of nuclear hormone receptors in developmental and reproductive biology.
