Objective
HEALTHY POULTRY aims to provide a scientific basis for future decision making, directed to improved strategies for prevention and control of epizootic poultry diseases, particularly Al. Four Tasks are carried out, each dealing with a strategic objective/ac tivity within the project. 1 Development and standardization of data and methods to identify poultry production areas according to their density, organizational and economic structure and contact structure. This Task is focused on the base risks for epizoo tic poultry diseases at regional level. Data of various origin and sources will ultimately be combined within a GIS-based toolbox, which can be used to analyze strategies and regions within the EU according to base disease risks. 2 Identification and quant ification of risk-factors for introduction and spread of Al at regional and farm level. This Task is focused on specific risks for Al. A comprehensive epidemiological-statistical analysis of data from Al epizootics in Italy and The Netherlands will be carr ied out. 3 Definition, epidemiological and economic analysis of integrated strategies for prevention, control and monitoring of Al. This Task is focused on alternatives for decision making. Within this Task, various types of epidemiotogical and economic co mputer models will be developed and subsequently used for epidemiological, economic and risk analysis. Inputs for these models will be supplied by the previous two Tasks. 4 Dissemination of project results, a Task focused on awareness of all people involve d. This includes consultation and participation of two groups: a platform of experts and decision makers (the 'users' of project results) and major representatives of stakeholders (those 'affected' by the implementation of new strategies). Given the struct ure of the project, new scientific insight could relatively fast lead to the implementation of new epizootic disease policies, with the prospect of an improved animal health status within EU
