Environmental cancer risk, nutrition and individual susceptibility

Objective

This Network of Excellence will be focused on exploring the potential of biomarkers of exposure as well as bioindicators ofdisease to study how diet and hereditary factors can influence environmental cancer risk with the ultimate goal to reduce thecancer burden in Europe.Bringing together researchers from different disciplines to identify data gaps and forward suggestions for improvements ofexisting techniques, as well as to utilize common material and human resources, will facilitate the creation of a dynamic European consortium in the area of environmental cancer risk, nutrition and individual susceptibility, that not only conductsresearch, but that is also capable of providing support to regulators, industry and the general public. The objectives of ECNIS have been classified into the following four groups of Activities: The Integrating Activities aimed to establish a durable network of strongly collaborating participants, using harmonized, integrated resources, data bases, procedures and quality standards for common use as a base for performing coordinatedjoined research activitiesThe Joint Research Activities, focused on the exploitation of technological and scientific innovation in a nutrition andmolecular cancer epidemiology with a ultimate use for cancer riskThe Spreading of Excellence Activities focused on training and mobility programmes for inside and outside network andsharing of the acquired knowledge with different stakeholders (researchers, industry, society, regulators, health care etc.)The Management Activities to establish a functional, flexible management structure to ensure efficient communication between ECNIS participants, with the EC, and different stakeholders and to guide the network towards its ultimate goal ofbecoming a recognized world-class force.
