The ultimate aim of the INTEGRATION 4 WATER project was to efficiently support participation of the new Member State (NMS) and associate candidate country (ACC) organisations in the last call of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) and in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) as partners in project consortia for the following reasons:
- an effective and topic-oriented promotion of their research potential and expertise was missing;
- support of their early involvement in the formulation of FP7 specific work programme in the area of water and soil research was needed;
- it was necessary to ensure that the research priorities and needs of the NMSs/ACCs emerging from the up-to-date conducted FP5 and FP6 research and technological development (RTD) projects were covered in the FP7 research agenda.
In order to accomplish the project goal two strategic objectives were set:
- to stimulate and encourage participation of research organisations from NMSs and ACCs in the FP6 and FP7 projects in the research areas of water and soil;
- to actively contribute to the development and implementation of the FP7 work programme in water and soil-related issues.
The activities of the project led to the following achievements:
- setting up a unique NMS/ACC dedicated INTEGRATION4WATER internet service established a durable, sustainable and effective mechanism for a continuous dissemination and exchange of updated information about the water research initiatives in Europe;
- setting up the database of NMS/ACC research teams structured for the FP7 proposal development needs in the research areas of water and soil ensured an easy access for the NMS/ACC researchers and thus facilitated their involvement in the FP7 project consortia;
- elaborating 11 new research themes worked out jointly by over a hundred NMS/ACC and OMS researchers as a direct outcome of the workshop event (the foci of these topics reflected the actual research needs, as well as the substantial and specific expertise of researchers and organisations in the NMSs and ACCs);
- establishing seven topical expert groups consisted of over 100 researchers and international teams of researchers.
