Objective
This project is designed to promote and facilitate the dissemination of results of excellently graded past and present programmes (ECLAT Network, CDIA Concerted Action; both jointly supported by EC, PAHO and local/national authorities) and to prepare future activities. It promotes collaboration in research, surveillance and control activities against Chagas disease and its triatomine bug vectors throughout the Americas. The activities include studying the behaviour of triatomine bugs, in support of Chagas disease vector control programmes throughout Latin America. Important focal points of the work are 1) to improve understanding of the evolutionary processes involved in adaptation of sylvatic species to colonise domestic environments, 2) to provide collaboration and support to congenital transmission and blood bank transfusion control programmes, and 3) to promote regional workshops intended to disseminate and discuss the implemented measures in the control of Chagas disease. In three analytical appraisals the re-colonization aspects will be considered. In the two workshops, one in the Andean and Central America/ Mexico region and another in the Southern Cone region groups of scientists from Europe and Latin America and experts of control programmes and policy makers will exchange technologies and standardise criteria for control interventions. The abstracts will be published.'
