Uniformity in testing and monitoring HIV resistance

Objective

UNITE-MORE aims to coordinate the leading activities in the area of surveillance of HIV resistance in Europe with relevant activities at the global level. Specifically UNITE-MORE will lead to a joining offerees of the EU funded European SPREAD network and the global HIV resistance surveillance network (HIVResNet) of the World Health Organisation (WHO) under the '3 by 5' initiative. The mission of UNITE-MORE is to establish a uniform global surveillance network for HIV drug resistance monitoring, providing s cientists and (inter-) national, European and WHO policy makers with relevant and comparable global data on the prevalence, transmission and trends of HIV drug resistance, by coordinating actions under the European SPREAD network, HIVResNet and, networking with WHO policy makers, notably HIVResNet The activities of UNITE-MORE can be divided into three main areas: (i) coordinating the selection, instalment and validation of national HIV drug resistance surveillance teams in over 40 countries in Eastern-Europ e, Africa, Asia and Latin- and South-America (ii) development of common clinical laboratory standards for the monitoring of HIV resistance (standard protocols, sample collection methods and standard data storage and analysis) and (iii) coordinating the tra ining and operational support to the country HIV drug resistance surveillance teams. UNITE-MORE will actively contribute to the further development, transfer and take-up of European FP5 funded SPREAD clinical laboratory guidelines and systems at the global level, as well as contribute to the objectives of the European Research Area (ERA) notably the opening up of ERA to third countries (specifically poor-resource countries), increased networking at the global level and raising the scientific and technologic al profile of Europe.
