Higher European research course for users of large experimental systems: HERCULES annual sessions (HAS) and specialized courses (HSC)

Objetivo

The aim of the HERCULES programme is to train young European researchers (PhD students, post-doctoral scientists, ¿) to optimally use the state-of-the-art instruments at the present and future Large Installations (LI) which deliver neutrons (n) or synchrot ron radiation (SR). More than fifteen LI delivering n and SR for research purposes are operating in the European Union. They are used for studies in a wide variety of fields from physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences to medical or industr ial applications.Since its inception in 1991, the HERCULES annual sessions (HAS) have offered basic theoretical and experimental training for a multidisciplinary audience composed of young biologists, chemists, physicists, geoscientists, industrial scienti sts, ¿ organised in the most part at the scientific site where two European LI (ESRF and ILL) are located. The HAS run several weeks (8 in 1991, 6 in 2004) for training 70-80 full time participants per year to use the exceptional infrastructures at the LI, as well as their associated high-level human potential. The great success of the HAS has been due to the coupling of practicals on high performance instruments (40% of the programme volume) carried out at partner LI (ESRF, ILL, ELETTRA, LURE, LLB, SOLEIL (2007)) with lectures and tutorials. The HAS has also helped to build a European network of young researchers using n and SR for condensed matter studies and has greatly contributed to consolidate the communities of the two complementary investigational to ols. At present, one thousand young researchers from more than 1600 applicants have attended the HAS. The high level programme proposed here is composed of seven events over the 2005-2008 period. The lectures will be given by the best European specialists to selected young researchers in a variety of scientific sites (Grenoble, Trieste, Saclay...) specifically chosen for their excellent facilities that will be used for practical training. The four HAS event
