Objective
Paperwork is concerned with providing distinctive ways of interleaving paper documents with digital materials. We will provide people with new forms of functionality in everyday environments through seemingly mundane artefacts. The project will involve a range of activities which at each point give critical consideration to the production, practice and use of everyday documents. The project will focus on developing a core technology for interlinking established content in paper and electronic domains. This will be demonstrated through a robust application where a non-obtrusive pattern on the paper allows users to interrelate content with associated digital information. Paperwork involves innovative developments in the production of novel substrates, inks, reading devices and the integration of software and communication resources as well as requiring an adaptable information architecture. Paperwork draws on innovative research to develop support for authoring information and associated links. The development of the hardware, software and information infrastructure will be informed by empirical studies of people using paper documents and associated tools as part of their everyday activities coupled with studies of those who have the responsibility for producing digital and paper content. The project will examine how publishers, professionals and other 'users' currently design materials using particular media. Drawing from the findings of these studies we will undertake technical interventions where we provide people with various augmented technologies as well as authoring tools to support the production of content and interlinking of materials. Hence the project develops hardware solutions, a software and information infrastructure, and design augmented paper products. Drawing upon these studies it will support the development of practices, procedures and potential exploitation strategies.
