Objective
Relatively little is known about the spatial pattern of environmental variability at low latitudes, and inter-relations to Europe. By understanding phase relationships of ecosystem response to change, the research will unravel the underlying climate dynamic s and enhance our predictive capability, and its associated societal impacts.
The York Institute for Tropical Ecosystem Dynamics (KITE) will adopt an interdisciplinary approach to integrate new palaeo-environmental data sets with ecosystem modelling initiative s. KITE will explore past, present and future ecosystem dynamics from before the last glacial period (21,000 years ago) to the present at a number of sites in Kenya and Tanzania, an area that encompasses one of the world' stop biodiversity hotspots. KITE will develop a team focused in an emerging research direction that will enhance our understanding of ecosystem dynamics, not just in the field area but more generally to the global ecosystem by producing results with socio-economic and policy implications. Arranged into six (funding requested for 4.5) PhD projects and two postdoctoral positions. KITE will combine, hither to separate, but complimentary research strands, to work between the traditional boarders of distinct research communities and provide a catalyst for potentially excellent early stage researchers to work within a world-class research cluster.
Results will be used to test modelling studies and develop bio-geographical theory at a range of spatial and temporal scales. The research outcomes will improve the prospect for forecasting impacts of climate variability on agriculture, ecosystem functioning and health and will lead to an increased scientific understanding regarding land use, environmental conservation and climate change. Implicit in the research group i s capacity building, integration of social and natural sciences and promotion of North-South collaboration.
