Assessing recidivism of Domestic Violence an early Intervention approach

Objetivo

Domestic violence is a wide spread social problem that affects millions of women all around Europe and in other part of the world. Preventing and reducing violence in intimate relationships might help creating safer environments for those involved and for children exposed to domestic violence. In some European countries, such as Italy, there is still a scarce attention and professionalism in facing these cases and determing, which victims are at higher risk of being revictimised by their partner or former partner or even killed by them.

The project will take into consideration cases of domestic violence that will be referred to the police or to special services dealing with victims, in two different Italian sites (Casería and Rome). The aim is to identify those victims that are most at risk of developing short and long term consequences (individual risk factors) and those abusive partners who are more likely to become violent.

The risk assessment approach of Spousal Assault was developed in Canada (SARA, Spousal Assault Risk Assessment, Kropp and Hart, 1998) and subsequently introduced in Sweden and in the Netherlands. During the project data will be collected from with an Italian sample of victims with regard to their emotional and traumatic psychological state; assessment of the perpetrator's risk of recidivism will also be performed. The instrument used will be those developed and validated during the 2 years Marie Curie Fellowship in the NL.

The research project will consist in making contacts with local services such as victim support agencies and police to train them in risk assessment tool. A longitudinal study will be conducted in order to assess which are those cases most at risk and whether the assessment done in the previous three months is able to predict future behaviour. Data will be published in International Scientific Journals and students from the host University will be provided on risk assessment techniques.
