Objective
Smallholder agro-silvo-pastoral systems are the main form of agricultural production in Latin American (LA). Whereas
agricultural products are destined towards self-consumption, animal products, basically milk and dairy products, play an
important role as a source of income. However, environmental degradation, low income, poor access to markets, low
hygienic quality and open market policies have increased pressure on these systems;contributing to reduced sustainability
while compromising the lives of millions of rural dwellers. The prevailing economic conditions render it difficult for farmers
to access appropriate technologies to generate added value outputs. As for consumers, there is an important dependence
on raw milk and low added value products coming from diseased livestock populations, that endanger the development
possibilities for their human capital.European ruminant production systems in less-favoured areas share many features and
problems with those of LA. There are many experiences that have lead to advances in the improvement of food security,
environment preservation, and enhanced living conditions for farmers. Experience and knowledge gained from European
systems can be transferred to LA. This proposal will put together fragmented R+D activities carried out within Europe and
some LA countries and so strengthen know-how exchange within these areas. The group will be multidisciplinary in terms
of functions [policy makers, scientists, NGOs] and expertise [resource management, agriculture, agro-biodiversity preservation,
markets, quality and safety assurance schemes]. The main outcome of the SSA will be the organization of workshop
pointing towards the development of systems on the basis of food security, market opportunities, production efficiency and
sustainability. Guidelines and recommendations directed to policy makers from LA governments with practical
implications for rural policy design will be delivered.
