Institutional and economic instruments for sustainable water management in the Mediterranean region

Objective

The objective of INECO is to establish a Mediterranean network of research institutes, public authorities and stakeholders for coordinating research and analysing decision making practices on the application of institutional changes in the water sector. IN ECO encompasses a series of coordination activities aiming to: a) Promote the exchange of good practices, information and research between participating institutes regarding the role of institutional and economic instruments in sustainable and efficient w ater use; b) Enhance synergies between the partners of the consortium and other stakeholders through the performance of studies and the organisation of participatory workshops for assessing the efficiency of currently applied water management practices and validating alternative governance structures, economic tools and policies, and c) Formulate guidelines for alternative institutional arrangements, able to promote IWRM through the application of appropriate and socially acceptable economic instrument s. The adaptive guidelines will be integrated in a web toolbox, able to support the network beyond the lifetime of the project.
