Objectif
The Association Agreement and the S&T and Technological Cooperation Agreement signed by the EU and Chile during 2002, represent a concrete major step to support collaborative activities and to stimulate new cooperative links between European and Chilea n research communities, taking mutual benefit of the openess of ERA and Framework Programmes. Considering the historical research relationship with Europe, Chile has a strong scientific and technological research capability to increase the cooperation in o rder to enable reciprocal access to knowledge and skills. Since the signature of the S&T Cooperation Agreement various joint activities related to the FP6 to promote interaction at a scientific and institutional level, were carried out by CONICYT and D G Research of EU Commission. The results of these iniciatives are reflected in the participation of 10 chilean research institutions in european FP6 projects already in execution.Although these results are important, they are not sufficient to generate a p ermanent and growing participation of the Chilean S&T community in the ERA. The overall objective of CHIEP is to highlight and improve the existing co-operation in S&T and to develop new opportunities enhancing the existing links between the Chilea n and European research and technological communities. For this purpose it is necessary to provide better information and dissemination, create awareness, motivate the creation of new links between scientists, mutual mobility, to increase quality, quantity and visibility of this cooperation. Scientific oriented workshops, mobility of scientists and Chilean research institutions, accompanied by a permanent portal in Internet which generates the necessary information in order to strengthen the links between t he scientific communities, and a specific dissemination plan, are the basic compounds defined in this project to insure a major visibility and growth of the scientific and technological cooperation.
