Semantic analysis of Audio for Multimedia Management

Objective

The objective of the project is to establish an active research group for advanced audio processing for multimedia management at the University of Âilina in Slovakia. The aim is to advance the state-of-art by developing audio analysis tools to extract knowledge and semantics from a digital audiovisual content. Semantic analysis is a new active research topic in multimedia processing and management. Semantic analysis is crucial to enable fast, effective and human-friendly access to digital multimedia content (television archives, Internet audio and video, digital libraries). It also allows delivery of the content to different cross-media platforms (e.g. hand-held and mobile devices). When either audio or visual information alone is not sufficient in determining the scene content, combining audio and visual cues may resolve the ambiguities in individual modalities and thereby help to obtain more accurate answers.

The SEMANTICA project has a multidisciplinary aspect and aims to bridge the gap, which traditional ly exists between the audio and visual analysis communities. The audio and multimedia research group will be led by Dr. Roman Jarina who has strong experience in that area, which he gained during his initial Marie Curie fellowship at Dublin City University. The aim of the SEMANTICA project is to build research in the new currently highly preferred area that is not represented at any other institution in Slovak republic and thus to contribute to increase quality of research and education in Slovakia (Associated Candidate Country) as well as to raise its recognition within European Research Area.
