Objective
This project aims to assess influence of indoor air pollution on human health and comfort and includes:
- identification and characterization of pollutants and sources,
- evaluation of population exposure,
- assessment of environmental factors influencing exposure and/or comfort or well being
- evaluation of the effects on human health,
- development and testing of reference methods.
Moreover the collation and diffusion of data and knowledge in the field is considered of primary importance.
This project aims to assess the influence of indoor air pollution on human health and comfort and includes:
identification and characterisation of pollutants and sources;
evaluation of population exposure;
assessment of environmental factors influencing exposure and/or comfort, or well being;
evaluation of the effects of human health;
development and testing and reference methods.
CURRENT STATUS The following new Working Groups (WGs) have been set up :
WG 5 : "Protocol for the determination of biological pollutants" (co-ordinator H.U. Wanner - CH)
Experts from 8 countries are working together to develop a reference procedure for sampling and analysis of microorganisms present in indoor air. A first draft has been discussed by the Management Committee.
WG 6 : "Ventilation requirements" (co-ordinator P.O. Fanger - DK)
Experts from 7 countries are working together to develop reference values for ventilation requirements on the basis of perceived air quality. The Management Committee has assessed a preliminary draft which is now being finalized.
WG 7 : "Sick building syndrome research" (co-ordinator G. Raw - UK)
Experts from 8 countries are preparing guidelines on how to design and implement studies aimed at an understanding of the phenomenon and its causes.
WG 8 : "Procedure for the characterization of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emitted from indoor materials and products" (co-ordinator M. De Bortoli - I - JRC)
Experts from 7 countries and the Commission met for the first time to evaluate a reference procedure developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency and to discuss changes needed for use under European conditions. The method being considered uses small environmental test chambers.
WG 9 : "Strategies for VOC measurements in indoor air" (co-ordinator B. Lundgren - S)
Experts from 7 countries and the Commission are preparing guidelines on sampling of VOC in indoor air, considering a variety of measurement objectives. Possible further WG goals are the validation of the guidelines and the organisation of survey measurements of indoor VOC concentrations in Europe.
