Collective Home Interface Made on Existing Networks in Europe

Objectif

The CHIMENE project addresses the provision of new services to the home via communication networks using existing home bus architectures, media and services. The use of existing infrastructures is an important economic factor in the take-up of home systems.

The work planned is service-driven, and aims to evaluate the approach on actual large-scale home configurations in Europe. This will permit various simulations using existing services and new services as they develop during the course of the project.

Existing home networks and sub-networks consist of a mixed configuration of twisted pair, power line, coaxial and infrared media. The planned open architecture interconnecting bus system, Home Service Community Network (HSCN), will enable the connection of each home bus system both to a common coaxial medium and to external networks (CATV, PSTN, ISDN). Interfaces between the media will be provided both in hardware and software, including all the necessary protocols for data exchanges. The user interface in the home will be based on a Minitel terminal.

The experiments will be conducted in three countries (France, Portugal and Spain) in order to test as many different configurations of service and communication networks as possible. Each country will have the same basic configuration for services and several site-specific ones.

The project will be conducted in two phases, with the first based on a range of basic services, and the second including extended services.
