Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

We are attempting to detect quantum fluctuations in small devices. If this is achieved, these devices could be exploited as the backbone of a new quantum information processing architecture. This is important for very fast computation and protecting the codes of our banking system. The same device could also be used to accurately measure very low temperatures (<100mK).

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

We have developed state of the art superconducting nanocrystalline diamond with the highest transition temperature of any group worldwide. We have also explained how this material operates and proposed new device structures with it.

We have developed states the art micro-electromechanical systems that have benefits to the telecommunications industry for sue as high frequency filters.

We have developed superconducting detectors that are being exploited in astronomical detection.

We have developed virus capture filters using diamond nucleation technology which are important for healthcare.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

We expect to detect quantum fluctuations at relatively high temperatures (50mK). This has never been achieved with diamond nanostuctures and opens up many new devices. We have not been Abel to detect these flotation sets but have made a major step forward towards this goal. Fortunately, many technologies have been realised along the way which have social benefits such as high frequency MEMS for telecoms, superconducting detectors for astronomy and virus capture for healthcare.
