Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

DiamLite is a company developping nanodiamonds with a permanent fluorescence.
The objectives are to produce and market these diamonds, with an important brightness.
This innovative technology takes place in a context of strong demand from the fields of life sciences, oil exploration and struggle against counterfeiting.
All these fields have issues of permanency of the marking, of toxicity of their usual markers, of easy forging of security tags. These issues can raise another and more important issue of public health.
DiamLite has a patented production process. The size of the diamonds are adaptable to the application, and the fluorescence can be easily detected.
No company currently sells well-characterised fND as DiamLite is, using a stable industrial process.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

The objectives of DiamLite for the reporting period were the configuration of the scale-up of bright fluorescent nano-diamonds production, and the carrying out of some business development actions.
Both tasks have been started, and the business development has been completed.
The business development carried out a deeper market analysis for the applications of DiamLite. Concerning its outcome, it appears that DiamLite has to take position in a competitive environment. However, the characteristics of DiamLite nanodiamonds enable to differentiate from the other technologies, due to their permanent fluorescence, the possibility to personalise them in order to offer turnkey products, and their non-toxicity. All the applications are relevant, because DiamLite nanodiamonds can overcome their main issues.

The scale-up of the fluorescent nanodiamonds production lead to the launching of the production of a new batch of nanodiamonds, configured with the new parameters.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The final results expected are the industrial production of brighter fluorescent nanodiamonds and their marketing.
The use of such nanodiamonds will have important impacts in the struggle against counterfeiting, as it will be a new unforgeable and cheap tag for everyday products such as cigarettes. This is strongly linked to the issue of public health, by reducing the selling and smoking of potentially harmful products.
The coupling of diamonds to antibodies will be of great use in biological research, helping to monitor cells and enhance imaging.
