Periodic Reporting for period 2 - mmMAGIC (Millimetre-Wave Based Mobile Radio Access Network for Fifth Generation Integrated Communications)

mmMAGIC has been a significant collaborative effort between the participants in the consortium, to deliver a portfolio of high quality technical solutions that address the unique challenges of radio access technology (RAT) design, targeting at mm-wave frequency bands (6-100 GHz). The work carried out in mmMAGIC includes the identification of use cases, scenarios, requirements, and spectrum suitability, channel measurements and modelling, and development of innovative network and air interface technical components. The mmMAGIC visualisation tool and techno-economic assessment have created concrete examples of 5G capabilities in various mm-wave scenarios, as well as their feasibility in different deployment scenarios. The mmMAGIC channel model and its open-source QuaDRiGa platform, covering the entire frequency range from 6 to 100 GHz, have been developed through intensive modelling and validation of the huge amount of data gathered from twenty-two measurement campaigns across the Europe, has significantly impacted the wide 5G community on mm-wave channel characterization and modelling. A total of 23 key architectural and physical layer (PHY) technical components and solutions, have been developed, consolidated, harmonized, and integrated into a final system concept. This has significantly contributed towards the design and evaluation a 5G multi-RAT ecosystem, with the mm-wave RAT being an integral part of it.
In total, mmMAGIC has delivered 24 deliverables (internal reports and public deliverables), 11 IPRs, 70 scientific publications (including one best paper award in PIMRC 2016), three white papers; In terms of standard contributions, mmMAGIC has submitted 16 contributions to 3GPP, six to ITU-R, ten COST IRACON contributions, five to ETSI. mmMAGIC has generated a mmMAGIC channel model with the open source software platform QuaDRiGa, a mmMAGIC system simulator, and two mmMAGIC hardware demonstrations. Over the two years, mmMAGIC has delivered over 30 keynote speeches, invited talks, panels and presentations, over 10 (co-)organised workshops and special sessions, and a number of courses and tutorials based on mmMAGIC work.
Over the two years of the project, the technical results achieved have been delivered to a wide 5G community, including 5GPPP, research, industry, academia, regulatory bodies, and standardization. The work has had profound impact on the 5G ecosystem and laid a solid foundation for global standardization and alignment of new 5G technologies in mm-wave field. The results from the project have clarified scenarios and enabling technologies where the mm-wave cellular radio links have important roles, provided realistic and quantified assessments of the maturity of the different technological components, and have helped building consensus and belief of the viability and significance of the mm-wave technologies in research and industry.
Considerable advances have been made, addressing the significant challenges across a wide range of technology areas in the mm-wave field. The work carried out at mmMAGIC clarified scenarios and enabling technologies where mm-wave cellular radio links have important roles, demonstrated the feasibility and practicality of the technical solutions, and helped building the confidence and significance of continued research and development in the mm-wave field. The delivery of the mm-wave RAT, as an integral part of the 5G multi-RAT ecosystem, will significantly contribute to the comprehensive 5G Pan-European trials roadmap, and greatly support the European leadership in 5G technology, networks deployment and business.
mmMAGIC has created profound impact on the current and future know-how of 5G mm-wave technologies in the wider 5G community, and has laid a solid foundation for global standardization and alignment of new 5G technologies at the mm-wave field, which in turn has boosted the technology readiness in this crucial 5G area. Together, mmMAGIC has substantially influenced, and will continue to influence in the coming years, mm-wave academia, research, industry, regulatory, and standardization, in Europe and internationally.
