Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

This ERC proof-of-concept project led to the development of a novel prototype of functional optoacoustic neuro-tomography scanner, as well as insight into how such a technology could be positioned in today’s markets in order to ensure wide adoption. The prototype can deliver non-invasive real-time volumetric observations of activity in large neuronal populations of rodent brains. This new technology is poised to greatly outplay the performance envelope of the existing neuroimaging tools in terms of trade-offs between imaging speed, field-of-view, spatial resolution and penetration depth. It will thus help neuroscientists advance a better understanding of how brains process information and lead to new insights into neurological diseases.
