Development and market launch of novel technology for production of nutritionally complete plant proteins called FIDOs - “Functional (Protein) Isolates Derived from Oilseeds”.

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - FIDOs (Development and market launch of novel technology for production of nutritionally complete plant proteins called FIDOs - “Functional (Protein) Isolates Derived from Oilseeds”.)

Période du rapport: 2015-10-01 au 2016-01-31

The main objective of FIDOs project is to provide an innovative technology of extracting plant proteins (protein isolates) from rapeseeds – Functional Isolates Derived from Oilseeds. These isolates, characterized by well-balanced amino acid composition and preserved functionality of the native proteins, will be an alternative to animal and soy proteins.
"Our detailed feasibility study covered following tasks:

Task 1. Perform technical and technological feasibility study

Task 1.1. Study design for technology optimization and execution on the Unit Operation
The objective of the study was to investigate in the extraction process step the effects of particle size distribution, process time, process temperature and addition of salts on the performance of the process.
Study was designed and then performed in the task 1.4.

Task 1.2. Technical partner search: in area of constructing the Unit Operation and demonstrating real scale capacity
We identified suitable partners (i.e. rapeseed processors and engineering companies) willing to design and demonstrate feasibility of Unit Operation at scale representative for commercial process.
Letters of intent are attached in the Feasibility Study.

Task 1.3. Technical gap analysis: comparison with current technologies to define features to be improved, including Rapeseed Processors requirements
We identified features of the process to be improved. Action points were identified to improve indicated features. The overall goal of these actions is to improve economical metrics of the technology while delivering the product within desired specification.

Task 1.4. Process sample generation and analysis of the key parameters and features
Study outlined in Task 1.1. was performed. Conclusions from the extraction process analysis are positive, i.e. confirming feasibility of the adopted approach regarding platform technology.

Task 1.5. Definition of the full list of technical tasks necessary to carry out Phase 2 with key
subcontractors for specific tasks: 1) Demonstration and testing, 2) Piloting, 3) Scaling-up, 4) Market
replication, 5) Design and engineering
Detailed technical work plan to be executed in SME Instrument Phase 2 was elaborated. The need for subcontracting is indicated in relevant tasks.

Task 2.1. Market study and customer validation
Detailed market study was performed. Thorough desk research as well as in-depth interviews with potential customers were executed to assess the market size and potential for FIDOs technology. Summary SWOT analysis was delivered.

Task 2.2. Regulatory issues and standardization
Relevant policies and directives were analyzed. Timeline and costs of product registration were presented.

Task 2.3. IPR exploration
By means of external legal attorney we have prepared IPR protection trademark protection strategy. The limits and requirements in terms of ""Freedom to Operate” were assessed.

Task 2.5. Business partners and private co-investor search
Wide database containing possible future business and technological partners of Napiferyn was created. The result of partners’ search are letters of intent and agreements placed in Feasibility Study.

Task 2.6. Price and economic viability with business model simulation
Scenarios for large-scale production process updated with the findings from the optimization study, including CAPEX were presented.

Task 2.7. Dissemination plan
Dissemination activities were planned and performed: presence in media, events, study of website and corporate image deficiency.

Task 3. Updated business plan
Detailed Business Plan with marketing, dissemination and commercialization strategy was elaborated. We calculated basic business matrices like: resources required, expected revenues and costs of goods.
"
Phase 1 execution has proven that FIDOs project is feasible and has great commercial value. Therefore we plan to apply for the SME Instrument Phase 2 grant as we continue development of our technology to the state of maturity required to deliver FIDOs to the world market. This game-changing technology will tap onto new source of protein supply to the diverse consumer markets in Europe and worldwide and enable rapeseed processors to increase their revenues while making measurable positive impact on the global climate change.
