Modular thermoelectric system for industrial waste HEAT Recovery (HEAT-R)

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - HEAT-R (Modular thermoelectric system for industrial waste HEAT Recovery (HEAT-R))

Período documentado: 2015-10-01 hasta 2016-03-31

Waste Heat (WH) emissions are a major economic and environmental issue. 20% of the total waste heat energy lost by the European industry could be recovered by using Energy Harvesting techniques, implying an emission reduction of 70 million tonnes of CO2 per year or the equivalent to the total energy consumed in Ireland in 2014. This would give to the industry cost savings of more than 2 billion euros.
Current available EH solutions for WH recovery have important limitations due to their low adaptability to different industrial structures and their high maintenance costs. Nevertheless, AEInnova’s HEAT-R project proposes a modular solution that uses multiple ThermoElectrical Generation cells (TEG) associated and controlled through a programmable control unit based on System-on Chip (SoC) technology, overcoming actual limitations by providing:
• A larger power generation capacity, due to the association of multiple TEG cells.
• A lower-cost packaged solution, including TEG cells and control unit.
• An adaptable and fully scalable system.
The achievements of the SME Instrument first phase (September 2015-March 2016) have been:

1. Technical achievements:

a. Defined the manufacturing and industrialization processes for HEAT-R products included in an Operations Plan.

b. Developed a Certification Plan, a Quality Plan and a study of TEG Cells efficiency status

c. Contacted potential key partners such as potential suppliers, industrial partners and distributors.

d. Agreed with a top automotive company to make a pilot test in its premises in order to validate the industrial prototype. Installation will take place in August of 2016.

e. Developed a know-how protection roadmap of key technological components.

2. Commercial achievements:

a. Identified potential customers’ requirements and needs in order to be able to offer a Turnkey solution (installation, validation, maintenance...).

b. Improved the market study, including a deeper competitor analysis and an addressable market characteristics study. Identified and analysed the major competitors and studied our USP against them.

3. Impact achievements:

a. Apart from the SME Instrument funding, obtained 62.000€ from funding partners such as KIC InnoEnergy and the Repsol Foundation and 30.000€ from a private investor.

b. Generated 5 new jobs, partially thanks to the SME Instrument Phase 1 funding. Furthermore, HEAT-R project aims to generate 7 new high-qualified jobs from April 2016 to the end of the year.
