A disruptive method to free physicians from Hospital Information Systems by generating fault free patient diagnostic documents in real-time using natural language

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - REALM (A disruptive method to free physicians from Hospital Information Systems by generating fault free patient diagnostic documents in real-time using natural language)

Reporting period: 2015-10-01 to 2016-03-31

Physicians spend up to 30 % of their time typing data into Hospital Information Systems (HIS), which causes financial, qualitative and societal costs. There is growing need to increase quantity of physicians and decrease costs. The population is aging and patients spend less time in care after treatment causing patient visits to increase approx. 2 – 4 % per year. Speech recognition technology is seen as a solution for effective patient document creation, though it has yet to fill its goal. During SME instrument phase I of project REALM we conducted a feasibility study on how to create fault free patient document for physicians for real-time sign-off without them having to use a keyboard and mouse.
We conducted a technical and commercial feasibility whilst also ensuring that we have freedom to operate. The results were that we were able to confirm and prove that we are technically able to produce real-time patient documentation and that the model is commercially feasible. The results was to positively evaluate our feasibility study.
Speech recognition technology is seen as a solution for effective patient document creation, though it has yet to fill its goal. We solve issues facing speech recognition and address the needs of physicians, patient and hospitals better than competing solutions on the market. Our proposed solution is able to increase physician turnover by up to 25 % and reduce costs per diagnostic document by 40 – 80 %. Real-time sign-off completes consultation visit in one action and improves the quality of the patient documentation. These figures are equivalent to creating 13 888 new physicians inside EU-27 by the year 2020 according to project business plan.
