LAser Systems for Focused Ion and Electron Beams

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - LASFIB (LAser Systems for Focused Ion and Electron Beams)

Période du rapport: 2016-09-01 au 2017-08-31

The usual electron/ion sources are not very mono-energetic and at best have an energy dispersion of 0.3 eV. On the contrary, the atoms cooled by laser, with their sub-mK temperature, have an energy dispersion below the milli-electron volt (<1 meV). Thus, by ionizing a sample of cold atoms with continuous or pulsed lasers, we think we are able to realize a brilliant source of electrons/ions with excellent energy dispersion characteristics. The aim of the LASFIB project was to produce high-performance laser sources and a high-performance caesium jet for this project. We have studied and evaluated different technologies and architectures meeting the requirements for a laser source dedicated to the cooling and the excitation of an atomic beam of Cesium atoms. It should be stable, robust and transportable keeping in a mind its future use in an industrial focalized ion beam system. First prototype laser systems have been realized at 852nm and 510nm using Sum-frequency generation lasers. We have also successfully implemented a new Cs effusive oven
