Objective
A PREREQUISITE FOR SMOOTH OPERATION OF THE BLAST-FURNACE IS THAT THE BURDEN DESCENDS EVENLY. AT PRESENT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE, WITH THE MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE, TO MONITOR THE RATE OF DESCENT OF THE BURDEN PROPERLY. FOLLOWING INITIAL SUCCESSFUL TESTS (UNDER ECSC PROJECT 7210-AA/115, SEE CS8/476) THE THICKNESS OF THE LAYERS AND THE RATE OF DESCENT OF THE BURDEN CAN NOW BE DETERMINED BY MEASURING ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY. HOWEVER, THIS HAS SO FAR ONLY BEEN POSSIBLE IN RELATIVELY SMALL AREAS IN THE UPPER PART OF THE STACK.
THE PROJECT IS, THEREFORE, AIMED AT ACHIEVING:
- MEASUREMENTS COVERING GREATER AREAS, ESPECIALLY IN THE LOWER PART OF THE STACK,
- THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUITABLE ELECTRODES FOR THE LOWER, HOTTER PART OF THE FURNACE.
