Objective
ALL BLAST-FURNACE OPERATORS AGREE THAT THE COHESIVE ZONE IS CRITICAL IN THE PERFORMANCE OF A BLAST FURNACE.
THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO SEEK WAYS AND MEANS OF OPTIMIZING THE SHAPE AND POSITION OF THE COHESIVE ZONE.
ATTEMPTS ARE BEING MADE TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR MODIFYING THE SHAPE AND POSITION OF THE COHESIVE ZONE, USING THE TECHNIQUE FOR THE DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF THE COHESIVE ZONE AND THE MATHEMATICAL MODELS DEVELOPED AT THE CRM.
THE WORK IS BEING CARRIED OUT IN TWO STAGES:
- IN THE FIRST PHASE, EXPERIMENTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT ON A SIMULATION MODEL IN ORDER TO FORECAST THE VARIATIONS IN THE SHAPE AND POSITION OF THE COHESIVE ZONE THAT TAKE PLACE WHEN CERTAIN BLAST-FURNACE OPERATING PARAMETERS ARE MODIFIED;
- IN THE SECOND PHASE, THE FORECASTING RESULTS ARE TO BE VERIFIED ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE, USING AN EFFICIENT BLAST-FURNACE, IN ORDER TO DEDUCE THEREFROM A CODE OF CONDUCT FOR THE OPERATOR.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
