Investigation of sticking mechanisms during reduction of iron ore/coal mixtures in a fluidised bed reactor

Objectif

The new processes aimed at producing liquid metal directly from iron ores and coal generally involve a first step of pre-reduction in a fluidized bed reactor. It is well known that, during their reduction in a fluidized bed, iron oxides may undergo solid-state sticking phenomena that are especially detrimental to the operation and performance of the reactor. In general, the higher the temperature the more severe these phenomena. This requires operations to be effected at moderate temperature levels (around 600°C) that are not compatible with the industrial objectives of achieving high reaction kinetics and high levels of reduction. The present research is aimed at describing and understanding the physico-chemical phenomena that will allow the sticking of iron oxides during their reduction in a fluidized bed, in the presence of coal, to be controlled effectively.
