IN A CONTINUOUS CASTING MACHINE THE PROGRESS OF THE CASTING PROCESS IS TO A LARGE EXTENT DEPENDENT ON THE SOLIDIFICATION PROCESSES IN THE STRAND AND THUS ON SHELL GROWTH.
THE STRAND ISSUING FROM THE MOULD HAS A LIQUID CORE WHICH IS SUROUNDED BY A SOLID SHELL. BECAUSE OF SUBSEQUENT MECHANICAL STRESSES IN THE SECONDARY COOLING ZONE IT MUST BE STRONG ENOUGH TO PREVENT BREAKAGE AND THE OUTFLOW OF THE LIQUID CORE. THE DETERMINATION OF THE GROWTH OF THE SHELL WOULD HELP TOWARDS CONTROLLED SOLIDIFICATION, IMPROVEMENT OF THE MACROSTRUCTURE BETTER PLANT CONTROL WITH REGARD TO THE REDUCTION OF CENTRAL SEGREGATION AND A GENERAL REDUCTION OF HAZARDS IN THE CONTINUOUS CASTING PROCESS.
A CONTACT LESS CONTINUOUS MEASURING SYSTEM IS TO BE DEVELOPED WHICH WOULD AIM AT GIVING MEASUREMENT RESULTS AS DIRECTLY AS POSSIBLE. MECHANICAL AND METALLURGICAL CHANGES IN THE CAST PRODUCT ARE TO BE AVOIDED. THE THERMAL CONDITIONS OF THE CASTING PROCESS WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN DESIGNING THE MEASUREMENT HEAD.
IN ADDITION, A MODIFIED SYSTEM FOR THE SELECTIVE MEASUREMENT OF SHELL THICKNESS WILL BE DEVELOPED. THIS WILL ALLOW ANY LACK OF SYMMETRY OCCURING DURING THE SOLIDIFICATION PROCESS TO BE IDENTIFIED. IN ADDITION, COMPARATIVE MEASUREMENT METHODS POSSIBLY USING ULTRASONICS WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR CALIBRATION PURPOSES.
