Objective
The importance of the mould powder in continuous casting with respect to the surface quality of slabs is well known. In the field of blooms and billets, the mechanisms of flow and lubrication by the melted powder are less well known. The project is aimed at improving this situation. It will make use of high casting speeds: 2 to 2.2 m/min. An attempt will be made to establish the relation between the thickness of the liquid layer and the consumption of the powder. A system for aspirating the liquid film at the point where it flows between the mould and the solidified skin at the surface and in the angles will be developed.
