Objective
CRACKING AS A RESULT OF THERMAL STRESSING IS ONE OF THE MAIN CAUSES OF THE DETERIORATION OF STEEL LADLE LININGS. THIS RESEARCH IS AIMED AT GAINING A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF SUCH PHENOMENA THROUGH TESTS BOTH IN THE LABORATORY AND AT INDUSTRIAL SITES.
THE LABORATORY TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN AN ELECTRICALLY-HEATED SIMULATOR FURNACE MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO REPRODUCE, ON A SMALL SCALE, THE TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS TO WHICH INDUSTRIAL LININGS ARE SUBJECTED. MEASUREMENT OF THE RESONANCE FREQUENCY OF THE SPECIMENS TESTED WILL ENABLE THEIR DETERIORATION TO BE MONITORED. THESE TESTS WILL BE RELATED TO A SERIES OF BRICKS COMMONLY USED IN STEEL-WORKS (SILICO-ALUMINOUS BRICKS, BRICKS WITH A HIGH ALUMINA CONTENT AND MAGNESIUM-CHROMIUM BRICKS) WHOSE CHEMICAL, MINERALOGICAL, PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES WILL HAVE BEEN DETERMINED.
IN ADDITION, SPECIMENS WILL BE TAKEN FROM INDUSTRIAL LADLE LININGS IN ORDER TO OBSERVE THE FRACTURE APPEARANCE AND MAKE A COMPARISON WITH FRACTURES OBTAINED IN THE LABORATORY WITH A VIEW TO IDENTIFYING THE FRACTURE MECHANISMS AT WORK.
THIS BODY OF INFORMATION SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DRAW UP PRACTICAL RULES ENABLING THE THERMAL MANAGEMENT OF STEEL LADLES TO BE IMPROVED FOR THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LINING USED, WITH A VIEW TO IMPROVING THE LATTER'S PERFORMANCE.
