Objective
Despite progress made, hot rolled thin sheet cannot compete with cold-rolled strip of the same thickness, on account of its surface quality, flatness and mechanical properties. The aim of the research is to develop a process for manufacturing improved-quality hot-rolled strip by carrying out continuous heat treatment for the mechanical properties and continuous thermo-chemical treatment for the surface substances, the initial oxide being reduced by the gaseous route. After a laboratory study of the kinetics of scale reduction by hydrogen, the recycling of the reducing gas will be studied from the theoretical standpoint and on a pilot scale. The entire process (treatment and gas recycling) will then be tested on a pilot line for two types of surfaces (bare and galvanized). Microscopic examinations and corrosion tests will complete the research.
