Objective
CONTINUOUS CASTING IS BEING USED INCREASINGLY IN THE PRODUCTION OF CARBON AND ALLOYED STRUCTURAL STEELS SUPPLIED IN THE FORM OF ROLLED BARS FOR APPLICATIONS IN THE MOTOR VEHICLES AND GENERAL ENGINEERING SECTORS. INTERNAL AND SURFACE QUALITY REQUIREMENTS ARE PARTICULARLY STRINGENT FOR SOME APPLICATIONS (E.G. VEHICLE COMPONENTS), BUT NOT FOR ALL.
IT IS NECESSARY, THEREFORE, TO WORK OUT THE MOST ECONOMICAL OPERATING CYCLES TO ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED QUALITY LEVELS AND RESIST COMPETITION FROM OTHER MATERIALS.
THE QUALITY OF THE ROLLED PRODUCTS IN QUESTION IS CLOSELY CONNECTED WITH THE ORIGINAL QUALITY OF THE CONTINUOUSLY-CAST BLOOMS AND BILLETS, THE ROLLING PROCESS AND THE DEGREE OF REDUCTION THAT OCCURS DURING ROLLING. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO MAKE A RATIONAL DEFINITION OF THESE RELATIONSHIPS, BASED ON SOUND METALLURGICAL CONSIDERATIONS, WITH A VIEW TO DETERMINING THE LOWEST DEGREE OF REDUCTION POSSIBLE DURING ROLLING TO PRODUCE ROLLED BARS OF A SUFFICIENTLY HIGH QUALITY FOR THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH THEY ARE INTENDED.
THE STUDY CONCERNS CERTAIN TYPICAL CARBON AND ALLOYED STRUCTURAL STEELS FOR QUENCHING AND TEMPERING AND FOR CASE-HARDENING, PRODUCED BY CONTINUOUS CASTING AND COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED FROM INGOTS.
WITH REGARD TO QUALITY, A STUDY WILL BE MADE OF THE EFFECT OF CASTING-BLANK SIZE, SIGNIFICANT T CASTING VALUES, THE ACTION OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC STIRRER AND DIFFERENT ROLLING PROCEDURES; REDUCTION OF THE BILLETS AND BLOOMS.
IN PARTICULAR, A THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WILL BE MADE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANY CRITICAL CONDITIONS THAT ARISE DURING THE REDUCTION PHASE AND THE MATERIAL'S RESISTANCE PROPERTIES.
ROLLED BARS WITH VARIOUS DEGREES OF REDUCTION WILL BE CHARACTERIZED BY MEANS OF:
- MICROGRAPHIC TESTS;
- LOCALIZED ANALYTICAL EXAMINATION OF DEFECTIVE ZONES (SEGREGATIONS, GHOST-LINES);
- MECHANICAL QUALIFYING TESTS.
