Objective
THE RANGE OF PRODUCT SIZES WHICH CAN BE PRODUCED FROM A PARTICULAR CONTINUOUS CAST SECTION IS OFTEN LIMITED BECAUSE A MINIMUM OVERALL AREA REDUCTION IS DEMANDED TO ENSURE:
- CONSOLIDATION OF VOIDS OR LOOSENESS
- DEVELOPMENT OF MATERIAL PROPERTIES SIMILAR TO THOSE OF THE ESTABLISHED INGOT ROUTE PRODUCT.
IN MANY CASES THIS DEMAND FOR A MINIMUM AREA REDUCTION:
- LIMITS THE PRODUCT RANGE OF A MILL BECAUSE THE FEEDSTOCK SECTION DOES NOT ALLOW THAT AREA REDUCTION
- MEANS THAT A CASTER HAS TO PRODUCE A LARGER NUMBER OF SIZES WHICH ARE THEN COSTLY BECAUSE OF THE NEED FOR MOULD CHANGING ETC.
SOME INITIAL WORK TO QUANTIFY THE EFFECTS OF PENETRATION OF DEFORMATION AND TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF CHANGING ROLL GAP GEOMETRIES HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT. THIS PILOT WORK INDICATES THAT A METHODOLOGY CAN BE DEVELOPED WHICH WILL ESTABLISH THE DEGREES OF REDUCTION REQUIRED FOR A PARTICULAR ROLLING PRACTICE IN ORDER TO ENSURE CONSOLIDATION AND THE REQUISITE PRODUCT PROPERTIES.
THIS ALLOWS EXAMINATION OF ALTERNATIVE ROLLING GEOMETRIES WHICH CAN BE USED TO OPTIMIZE THE PROCESSING AND ACHIEVE THE RESULTS WITH A MINIMUM OF MECHANICAL DEFORMATION. ADOPTION OF THE OPTIMAL ROLLING PROCEDURES AND GEOMETRIES WILL ALLOW A WIDER RANGE OF SIZES TO BE OBTAINED FROM A GIVEN CONTINUOUS CAST SECTION AND, THEREFORE, OFFERS:
- A REDUCTION IN CASTER OPERATING COSTS
- A REDUCTION IN SUBSEQUENT PROCESSING COST TO ACHIEVE A SOUND PRODUCT
- MUCH GREATER FLEXIBILITY.
THE INITIAL WORK IS ESTABLISHING TECHNIQUES FOR PRACTICAL EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF DEFORMATION AND IDENTIFYING THE MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF THE STRESS-STRAIN STATES RELEVANT TO THIS ANALYSIS.
THE COMBINED METALLURGICAL AND ENGINEERING APPROACH WILL INTEGRATE THE PROCESS CAPABILITIES TO FACILITATE THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE NECESSARY PRODUCT QUALITIES.
