Laser-ultrasonic control systems for surface examination

Objective

The principle of the surface examination method is based on ultrasonic emission using a high-powered laser and on the thermal expansion of the body under examination. The IZfP, which has already carried out work in this field, proposes to test and improve the emitter. Various types of laser (neodymium - YAG) will be tested in order to assess their potential for ultrasound excitation. The digital electronics suitable for the purpose will also be studied and constructed. The BFI will develop the second objective of the project, which will consist in studying the suitability of different methods of interferometry for an industrial application and in constructing a prototype interferometer for the tests. The next stage of the work will be the construction of an industrial prototype for installing in a factory for the purpose of: - detecting surface defects at high temperature (1100°C), possibly underskin defects; - measuring the thickness of hot-rolled sections.
