Detection of surface and subcutaneous defects in hot continuously-cast billets by means of eddy currents

Objective

The project provides for an initial laboratory stage which includes the design of eddy current sensors, the definition of the conditions under which they are to be used and the development of software which would take into account geometric parameters (angles) and disturbance parameters (oscillation lines). The experiment will be carried out on artificial defects of various sizes and shapes, which may or may not have broken through the shell and which have been machined in austenitic stainless steel wedges. The second phase provides for the construction of a multi-coil head. In the third phase, industrial feasibility tests will be carried out on a continuous caster. This research will be carried out in conjunction with IRSID, the UNIMETAL company and CIREP (the company's process research centre).
