Objective Since knowledge of the phases of steel (inclusions, nitrides, carbides) is of growing importance to the steel manufacturer and the metallurgist, this research should make it possible, using current laboratory techniques, to develop fast characterization methods for oxide or nitride phases. A substantial proportion of the work will consist in optimising the conditions of thermal decomposition in order to differentiate between the signals obtained and to relate them to the phases present. Various parameters will be studied, such as temperature (rise time, hold time, multiple cycles), nature of the vessels, vector gases. In order to study the influence of thermal programming, two measurement techniques will be applied:1. atomic absorption spectrometry;2. catharometric or infrared detection used in oxygen and nitrogen dosers. The information quickly gathered by these methods will be correlated with the use properties associated with the nature of the phases present.
