THE CONTAINMENT OF RUST BY MEANS OF MONOLAYERS.

Objective

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO FIND A PROCESS FOR OBTAINING A SURFACE CONDITION DURING THE PRODUCTION OF STEEL SHEET WHICH IS AS RESISTANT AS POSSIBLE TO THE FORMATION OF THICK FILMS OF RUST. THE EFFECTS OF MONOLAYERS OF ENRICHED ELEMENTS OR COMPOUNDS AT THE SURFACE WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

VERY PURE IRON SURFACES ARE RELATIVELY INSENSITIVE TO AIR OR HUMIDITY AND SURFACES COVERED WITH A MONOLAYER OF ADSORBED OR SEGREGATED NITROGEN ALSO SHOW GOOD RESISTANCE TO RUST. IN CONTRAST, RUST CAN BE INDUCED BY SULPHUR OR CHLORINE. RUSTING CAN PROBABLY BE CONTAINED BY MONOLAYERS OF ELEMENTS SUCH AS N, SI, CR, ETC. OR COMPOUNDS SUCH AS BORON NITRIDE, CHROMIUM NITRIDE, TITANIUM CARBIDE, ETC., SINCE THE ADSORPTION OF SULPHUR OR CHLORINE IS PREVENTED AND THE DISSOCIATION OF H2O INHIBITED.

SURFACE LAYERS OF VARIOUS ELEMENTS OR COMPOUNDS ON IRON CAN BE APPLIED BY VOLUME SEGREGATION OR ADSORPTION, GAS-METAL REACTIONS, OR CVD PROCESSES FROM THE GAS PHASE.
DISTRIBUTION ON THE SURFACE AND THE STATE OF BONDING CAN BE MONITORED BY SURFACE ANALYSIS METHODS (AES, SPS). ATTACKS BY O2, H2O AND SO2 CAN BE OBSERVED BY OPTICAL, GRAVIMETRIC OR GAS VOLUMETRIC MEASUREMENTS.
METHODS OF ACHIEVING A RUST-RESISTANT SURFACE ON STEEL SHEET WHICH GIVE PROMISING RESULTS WILL BE TESTED IN THE LABORATORY. METHODS WHICH CAN BE INCLUDED IN THE PRODUCTION PROCESS FOR THIN SHEET (FIXING ANNEALING OR CONTINUOUS ANNEALING) WILL BE SOUGHT AND PUT FORWARD.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
