CONSTITUTION OF OXYDE FILMS AND CORROSION BEHAVIOUR OF STAINLESS STEELS.

Objective

THE MAIN OBJECT OF THE PROPOSAL IS TO DERIVE QUANTITATIVE DATA ON THE PITTING RESISTANCE OF STAINLESS STEELS USING ELECTROCHEMICAL, POTENTIO-STATIC CONTROLLED TECHNIQUES AND TO ADOPT ESCA AND AUGER SPECTROSCOPY TO CHARACTERIZE THE NATURE OF THE PASSIVE FILMS.
THE MATERIALS USED WILL BE SAMPLES OF COMMERCIAL STAINLESS STEELS AND EXPERIMENTAL ALLOYS WHICH WILL BE PREPARED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF ADDING OR REMOVING CERTAIN ELEMENTS. THE EFFECT OF MILL FINISH AND SURFACE EXPOSURE ON PASSIVE FILM BEHAVIOUR WILL ALSO BE STUDIED. AS A RESULT OF THIS WORK, IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP IMPROVED CORROSION RESISTANCE OR COMPOSITIONS THAT ARE CHEAPER OR LESS DEPENDENT ON STRATEGIC ALLOYING ELEMENTS.

STAINLESS STEELS RESIST CORROSION THROUGH THE FORMATION OF THIN, PASSIVE SURFACE FILMS. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE FILMS IS DEPENDENT UPON THEIR CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE WHICH IN TURN ARE CONTROLLED BY THE COMPOSITION OF THE BASE STEEL AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THE FILMS ARE FORMED OR TRANSFORMED. STAINLESS STEELS HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE COMMERCIALLY SINCE THE 1920'S BUT IN THAT TIME THERE HAS BEEN VERY LITTLE CHANGE IN THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE COMMON GRADES.
WHEREAS IT IS KNOWN THAT PASSIVE FILMS ARE COMPOSED PRINCIPALLY OF OXIDES OF CHROMIUM, MORE COMPLETE INFORMATION IS REQUIRED ON CONSTITUTION AND STRUCTURE IN ORDER TO FORMULATE MORE EFFECTIVE GRADES, EITHER IN TERMS OF IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OR LOWER COST.
OVER THE PAST DECADE, THERE HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN POTENTIOSTATIC TECHNIQUES THAT PROVIDE RAPID AND QUANTITATIVE DATA ON THE CORROSION RESISTANCE OF STAINLESS STEELS. AT THE SAME TIME, THE ADVENT OF ESCA AND AUGER SPECTROSCOPY CAN NOW GIVE A METHOD OF CHARACTERIZING THE CONSTITUTION OF METALLIC SURFACES AND PROVIDE AN IDEAL MEANS OF INVESTIGATING THE NATURE OF PASSIVE FILMS ON STAINLESS STEEL.
