Surface roughness and friction during pressing

Objetivo

The aim of the proposed research is to study friction during pressing operations - while disregarding galling phenomena - and to determine the influence of surface roughness on friction. The value of the research lies in the absence of forecasting methods or models and the lack of information on the topic. The study will relate to mild steels with and without a zinc-based protective coating and with different surface roughness properties. The use of a test rig comprising a series of metal rolls between which the sheet is conveyed and successively bent and straightened will make it possible to analyze, either separately or together, the working produced by deformation and that due to friction. The evolution of the surface roughness of the sheets will be evaluated during the tests by conventional measurements. The working due to friction will be related to the evolution in the surface roughness of the sheet and the tool. Account will be taken of the influence of the hardness and heating of the tool under consideration. The end result of this research should be a model for determining optimum surface roughness for the pressing operation and facilitating the design of pressing dies. The work will help fill the current gap in tool design knowledge.
