Effect of a yield point on the cyclic loading

Objetivo

Work on a current ECSC contract has recently shown that certain aspects of the cyclic behaviour of higher strength steels containing polygonal ferrite is closely related to the yield point behaviour of the steel. Thus, the extent of the yield point elongation has an important influence on the magnitude of the cyclic softening which is obtained in tests where small amounts of plastic strain are obtained. However, the degree of softening obtained when the yield point is removed is influenced by whether this is done by changes in the steel processing or the steel type. It is proposed that additional work should be carried out to investigate these effects further. This is particularly relevant since bake hardening steels, which develop strength as a result of yield point effects are of current interest. The steels to be covered would consist of low carbon mild steel as well as higher strength steels of different types. With information from this study it should be possible to optimise the processing of the steel to minimise the amount of softening obtained during cyclic loading and to be able to provide a good estimate of the expected changes in material properties as a result of cyclic loading by knowledge of the initial monotonic properties.
