Objective
Over ninety percent of all tin-plate products manufactured within the European Community are applied to the production of containers for food, drink and similar substances. A continuous improvement of these tin-plate products with regard to specification, range and quality is necessary to meet increasing competition from the many alternative packaging materials available, notably plastics, paper, aluminium and glass. In recent times developments in can making technology have resulted in a continuous reduction in the gauge of material used for cans as well as a reduction in the thickness of the tin coating or by substitution of other coating materials, notably chromium/chromium oxide. Further reductions in gauge of steel to below 0.14 mm are seen as being necessary to maintain the competitive position of steel as a packaging material. The research proposed intends to investigate the influence of factors such as steel composition, hot mill processing conditions, level of primary cold mill reduction, type of annealing and level of secondary reduction on the ease of formability and the metallurgical properties of thin gauge material.
